NHRC probes minor's illegal detention in adult jail
The NHRC has taken suo motu cognizance of a 16-year-old boy's illegal confinement as an adult inmate in a UP jail.
- A 16-year-old boy was illegally held in Kasna jail, Gautam Budh Nagar, UP for two months.
- He was arrested on April 14, 2026, following labour protests, and an FIR was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
- The NHRC issued notices to UP's DGP and DG, Prisons, seeking reports within two weeks.
- The boy remains in a juvenile home as his family cannot arrange bail surety.
- The NHRC DG (I) was directed to conduct a spot enquiry and report within one week.

Marine Gas Turbine Generators for Indian Navy Contract

India has been elected Vice-President of the Financial Action Task Force, a global anti-money laundering body.

India declared Naxal-free by March 2026
India achieved the milestone of being effectively free from Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) on 31 March 2026, after twelve years of sustained effort.
- India was declared effectively free from Naxalism on 31 March 2026.
- The transformation was guided by Vishwaas, Nirman, and Jan Kalyan pillars.
- The National Policy and Action Plan to address LWE was approved in 2015.
- Violence peaked in 2010 with 1,936 incidents and 720 civilian deaths.
- A target for Naxal-free India by March 31, 2026, was set on 24 August 2024.
- 597 fortified police stations were constructed compared to 66 before 2014.

India's First Commercial-Scale Coal-to-Ammonium Nitrate Project
PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for India's first commercial-scale coal gasification project in Odisha to boost energy security and reduce imports.
- PM Modi will lay the foundation stone of a ₹25,016 crore project on June 20, 2026.
- Located at Lakhanpur in Jharsuguda district, Odisha, on 350 acres.
- Developed by Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL), a BHEL and CIL joint venture.
- Will produce 2,000 tonnes per day of ammonium nitrate.
- Union Ministry of Coal provides ₹1,350 crore support under its incentive scheme.

Indian Navy to Commission Three Indigenous Warships in Kolkata
The Indian Navy will commission three indigenously built platforms in Kolkata on June 21, 2026, boosting its maritime capabilities.
- Dunagiri is the fifth Project 17A stealth frigate, equipped with BrahMos missiles.
- Sanshodhak is the fourth Survey Vessel (Large), for hydrographic surveys.
- Agray is the fourth Arnala-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft.
- The platforms were designed and constructed by GRSE, Kolkata, with over 75 percent indigenous content.
- More than 200 MSMEs participated in their construction, supporting Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

IITM and ARIES collaborate for Himalayan Climate Observation
An MoU has been signed between **IITM** and **ARIES** to establish a long-term climate monitoring station in the Himalayan region under the **Bharat Climate Observation Network** (**BCON**).
- The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) signed an MoU on 18 June 2026.
- The MoU establishes a Climate Observation Station at ARIES, Devasthal, under the Bharat Climate Observation Network (BCON).
- The collaboration aims for climate change research and long-term observation of climate variables for more than fifty years.
- The BCON will monitor meteorological parameters, climate-active trace gases, and soil moisture observations.
