EVM-VVPAT Commissioning Begins for 2026 Assembly Elections
The Election Commission of India has commenced commissioning EVM-VVPATs for the 2026 General Elections to Legislative Assemblies.
- Commissioning of EVM-VVPATs for constituencies polling on April 23 began on April 16, 2026.
- EVMs are randomized twice, first from district to Assembly Constituencies, then from AC to polling station.
- Tamil Nadu has 75,064 polling stations and West Bengal (Phase-I) has 44,378 polling stations.
- A mock poll of 1000 votes is conducted on 5% randomly selected EVMs.
- Randomization and storage are done in the presence of political party representatives and candidates.

Delimitation Bill 2026 to Benefit Southern States
The **Delimitation Bill, 2026** aims to increase Lok Sabha seats, assuring no reduction in representation for southern states.
- The Delimitation Bill, 2026 will increase Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 816 (a 50% increase model).
- Southern states' Lok Sabha seats will rise from 129 to 195, maintaining their 24% share.
- Individual states like Karnataka (28 to 42), Andhra Pradesh (25 to 38), Telangana (17 to 26), Tamil Nadu (39 to 59), and Keralam (20 to 30) will see increased seats.
- The new Delimitation Commission Act will not impact elections before 2029, with existing seats used until then.
- A caste census will be conducted during the individual enumeration phase of the upcoming census.

India to criminalise doping, strengthens global anti-doping efforts
India's Union Sports Minister announced criminal provisions against doping and reiterated global cooperation at the WADA GAIIN conference.
- India plans to introduce criminal provisions for trafficking/administering prohibited substances.
- The National Anti-Doping Act, 2022 and Amendment Act, 2025 align regulations with global standards.
- Anti-doping tests increased from 4,000 in 2019 to 8,000 in the past year.
- Adverse analytical findings declined from 5.6% in 2019 to less than 2% currently.
- India will establish new WADA-compliant drug testing laboratories.

India forms AI Governance and Economic Group (AIGEG)
India has constituted a high-level inter-ministerial body to lead its national AI governance strategy and policy development.
- The AI Governance and Economic Group (AIGEG) was constituted on 16 APR 2026.
- It will serve as India's central institutional mechanism for AI governance policy.
- The AIGEG is chaired by the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology.
- It is supported by a Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC) for advisory.

FIU-IND, SEBI MoU to Combat Financial Crimes
Financial Intelligence Unit-India (FIU-IND) and SEBI signed an MoU to enhance information sharing and coordination against financial crimes.

India's First Chip Fabrication Plant Notified in Dholera SEZ
The government has notified India's first chip fabrication plant, to be set up by **Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Private Limited** in **Dholera, Gujarat**.
- Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Private Limited will establish an SEZ in Dholera, Gujarat.
- This will be India’s first chip fabrication plant, spread over 66.166 hectares.
- The plant is expected to generate employment for 21000 persons.
- SEZ Rules, 2006, were amended on 03.06.2025, reducing minimum land to 10 hectares.
- Other approved SEZs include Micron Semiconductor Technology India Pvt Ltd in Sanand, Gujarat.
