Shahtoosh Trader Convicted in Landmark Wildlife Crime Case
A New Delhi court has convicted an art gallery owner for attempting to illegally export **Shahtoosh** shawls, concluding a 17-year-long case.
- Syed Shahid Ahmed Kashani was convicted on March 12, 2026, for illegal export attempts.
- The case, first detected in December 2008, involved 1,290 Shahtoosh shawls.
- The Tibetan Antelope (Chiru) is listed in Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
- This was the first wildlife offence prosecuted through CBI, coordinated with WCCB, Customs, and WII.
- WII confirmed Tibetan Antelope hair in 41 shawls through forensic examination.

Voter Information Slips Distribution for State Assembly Elections
The Election Commission of India has begun distributing Voter Information Slips for upcoming legislative assembly elections.
- Voter Information Slips (VIS) are being distributed for Tamil Nadu and West Bengal (Phase-I) elections.
- VIS contains voter details, polling station location, and 'Do’s and Don’ts' for poll day.
- Accessible Voter Information Slips (AVIS) with Braille are for Persons with Visual Impairment.
- VIS are distributed by BLOs door-to-door, at least 5 days before the poll.
- VIS are not accepted as stand-alone ID; voters need 12 authorised ID proofs or EPIC.
💡 Remember: VIS (including Braille AVIS) aids voters but isn't standalone ID; distributed by BLOs 5 days before polls.

DoT, SEBI MoU to Tackle Telecom-Linked Financial Frauds
The **Department of Telecommunications (DoT)** and **SEBI** signed an MoU to strengthen the fight against financial frauds and protect investors.
- The MoU was signed by DoT's Shri Sanjeev Kumar Sharma and SEBI's Shri Sandip Pradhan.
- DoT will share Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) and Mobile Number Revocation List (MNRL).
- SEBI will provide inputs on telecom resources linked to cyber fraud accounts.
- Intelligence exchange is enabled through DoT’s Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP).
- FRI has prevented financial losses of approximately ₹2300 crore in ten months.

Census 2027 Houselisting Operations Begin with Digital Focus
Phase I of Census 2027, Houselisting and Housing Census (HLO), commences in select states and UTs with a new digital approach.
- Field operations for Houselisting and Housing Census began April 16, 2026.
- It will run for 30 days until May 15, 2026.
- The Self-Enumeration facility was introduced for the first time in Census 2027.
- Around 12 lakh households have used the Self-Enumeration facility so far.
- All data is confidential under the Census Act, 1948.
💡 For the exam: Census 2027's HLO (Phase I) started April 16, 2026, features first-time Self-Enumeration, and ensures confidentiality under Census Act, 1948.
